The Right Camera Battery Cuts Photo Hassles
A digital camera battery is typically either a rechargeable battery pack or
standard AA.
Digital cameras are high-drain devices and if the camera uses
AA's you'll spend a lot on batteries in a hurry. The solution is rechargeable batteries.
Replaceable Batteries
Newer NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) AA batteries rated 1600-2100 mAh or higher are best, and less prone to the
so-called "memory effect" of older NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) batteries. Contrary to popular belief,
they will last longer per charge than throwaway alkaline batteries. Be sure to get a
quality charger and extra batteries.
Rechargeable Battery Packs
Most of today's digital camera
battery packs employ Lithium Ion (Li-ion)
photo batteries. Like NiMH, these batteries are superior to NiCad and disposable
batteries. Before choosing a camera, study reviews and ratings. If camera
features, quality and performance are similar, select the model with the longest
battery life.
It's frustrating and inconvenient to have to stop and change or
recharge the battery in the middle of a photo session. But be prepared and always have at least
one extra fully charged battery pack. The camera battery can be one of the least concerns on a photo outing,
but without some
basic planning and preparation can be a real pain in the neck.
